Music video storyline

After uploading all of the footage we filmed in the green screen we found that we had little idea how to place the footage in any order, as well as keep the audience interested (as the footage mainly shows a waist to head medium close up shots). This has made us realize the importance of a narrative within the footage in order to show us a sense of direction and interest for the audience.

We have decided to set a narrative next to the man on the moon garages as the bright colors will help fit with the mise en scene.

Sparklers

As the song provides quite a bouncy bright atmosphere, we have come up with the idea of possibly using sparklers to create shapes, patterns and words in the sky

further ideas

After viewing our rough video cut and considering our ideas, we have decided to change some of our original ideas. We have decided to film most of the video in green screen and, depending on how it looks, re-film the whole song on a different location to edit clips from each of the filming sessions together.
some ideas that we have are to place boxes on our heads and continue dance routines.
we also want to film people on spacehoppers and speed up the footage. also dressed up people running around could look good if eddited correctly.
we have thought about the style of bright costumes to use and the dance routines we will use during the filming.

Green Screen backgrounds

Our video will include a mixture of shots between the green screen and public streets.

We began researching the types of images backgrounds we could include as well as the possibility of filming out own backgrounds - like shown in the student example of "bird flu"

Examples of our own moving images could be -

somebody bouncing a brightly colored ball

Toy animals - moving in a formation

People using pen scribbles.

A kettle going off with steam

Inspired by our existing music video research and the 60s theme in the Dee-lite grove is in the soul music video, we could possibly include retro - 60s wallpaper, patterns and colors.

Brightly colored absrtract backgrounds will also suit the genre and mood of the song.

We could also include a selection of multicultural background images that fit the costume and theme of the artists image.

Costume ideas

After the evaluation of our test footage and further research into student examples we have decided that the "chav vs geeks" dance off idea might not have the same impact as a more abstract costume such as aliens, cowboys or robots.

We feel that a more fully loaded, abstract costume will make us appear less obvious to the audience making the performance more interesting.

we have also decided to perhaps include the use of space hoppers in our performance as it would fit with the bouncy beat of the music.

Here are a couple of images brainstorming the possible costumes / items we can use in the video

Blog feedback and Targets

When the class looked at our blogs we received feedback, we were told that our blog is pretty detailed,
however we might want to use different varied camera angles in the final piece.
We also need more information on equipment and costume,
they said that the location shots looked good and that the test footage shows good movement that fitted in with the movement and that the image research in the band as good and detailed, also that if the transactions are clearly worked out the footage would be good if it is funny.
We asked the question do you think the combination of green screen and location shots will work ( as seen in the test film)
they responded by saying if we are consistent with the green screen and we use special effects it would work well.

animatics feedback

After the rest of the class viewed our animations video, they responded with encouragement and criticism which we found very helpful with furthering our ideas for the music video.
Some of the positive feedback that we got was included-
it shows typical qualities of a dance video
it sounds as though it will be funny
the structure of the video is clear

we were also warned by the rest of the class that-
we will need to edit the video fast paced so that it will go with the video
if we used the same idea throughout the video it may get boring
it is difficult to make people deliberately dance and it may look fake

We have taken this feedback into consideration and will apply it to how we shoot the footage and edit it.

Test Footage

This is our test footage. It presents the basic theme of our music video. Including dance routines, speedy editing.

location

Our location is going to be in a public area such as Cambridge and our college and green screen. The pictures above are just some places we could use in our video and only ideas on where we would use and we will later think about where we wanted the actual video would be shot.

Student work

I like the end of this video when they use green screen with the different coloured backgrounds and different shapes. I also think this video uses the idea that we thought of about slowing down the shots we take or speeding them up. This video shows how this idea would work well along with green screen.

This video also uses some of the affects we would like to use in our video. Such as the split screen and the coloured backgrounds. In this video they use the split screen with the close up of the lips which is the exact shot we would like to use of sections of our music video.

Song lyrics

The song we have appears to be a remix of M.I.As original Boyz song meaning the lyrics differ slightly.

We had a look at the lyrics of the song and decided what to present in accordance to them. For example - with the "how many" we could have the singers image duplicted many times on the screen.

ThaNANNANANANANANANNANANANNNANA [4x]BOYS THERE HOW MANY BOYZ THERE?How many? How many tequilas in the placeHow many beers are in the case?Boys there? How many?Boys there? How many? How many dutty wine swing it awayHow many shots without the case?Boys there? How many?Boys there? How many? How many mash up and in a hazeHow many wacky dip fall the headBoys there? How many?Boys there? How many? How many no money boys are crazy [2x]How many boyz are rawHow many no money boyz are rowdyHow many start a warHey nowLet me go, hey nowCan we go ridin up a dirty track up in LaventilleWill you, show me before I make it back somewhere I can chill?Hey nowLet me go, hey nowCan we go riding up a motor bike up to sugar hillCooking chicken on the wall with the system up on fullWhat we do now [4x]Duppa bounceDem der duppa bounceOooo gosh its the new warlordThaNANNANANANANANANNANANANNNANA [2x]BOYS THERE HOW MANY BOYZ THERE?How many? How many no money boys are crazy [2x]How many boyz are rawHow many no money boyz are rowdyHow many start a warOooo gosh its the new warlord

Band image research

In order for us to get a clearer inspiration to how our song might be presented. We looked at a number of pictures and music videos and analysed how the artist portrays herself and the music.

In her photoshoots we noticed she wore alot of bright clothing and appeared to present a slight multicultural presence. A theme which is also held strong with her music videos

This image is also reflected greatly within the lyrics and sound of her music.

Animatic

This animatic shows some of the ideas that we would like to produce in our final music video. It isn't a full view but only ideas of some of the effects we would use such as split screen and the choice of people we would use such as chavs/nerds etc. and where we would shoot the scenes and what some of the shots would look like for example close ups of feet lips etc.

band research

In order to truly get an understanding of the band who we are creating the video for, we researched them by watching to some of their other videos. We also went on their myspace and messaged them telling them that we are creating a video for them and asking them what influenced them for the song boyz which we are making the video for. We also asked them if they would like to see it when we finnished.

in todays lesson...

We continued our shot listings so that when we film our video, we will have a guide of what we need to shoot. We may decide to slightly change the shot listings or order of them depending on how the filming went.
shot 1- The introduction shot of different pairs of shoes landing on the ground in time to the beat.
shot 2- lips or face of singer miming to the words "bounce". This shot will be eigther done on green screen or of the singer with a background.
shot 3- this shot is an establisting shot of the different characters used in the video. This shot will show a group of chavs walking along in eigther mid shot or close up of their legs.
shot 4- This shot will cut to a contrasting group of people such as "geeks" walking along.
Shot 5- This shot will cut back to the original performance shot miming "oioioioi".
Shot 6- this shot will be of a bass guitar playing the bass line.
shot 7- shot of chavs walking still
shot 7- shot of geeks walking untill they reach eachother in shot
shot 8- the two groups are facing eachother frozen untill they alternativley start dsancing
shot 9- people start to gather round them watching
shot 10- shots of dancing layerd over green screen.

pitch/ideas

On first listening to the track, M.I.A- Boyz, our group all agreed that it was very visually stimulating and we chose it because we initially had lots of ideas upon hearing it. Because the song is very upbeat, we will feature dancing in the video, instead of a band playing. This creates many interesting oppertunities for what we can include in our video such as eigther people in costumes dancing or normal people dancing to the music. We may also include a dance machine and possibly aerobics. Because the song is titled boyz and is a very flamboyant song we have considered the idea of using cross-dressers showing them getting ready and dancing. Alongside the main theme, we will also show lots of abstract footage which is colourful and sped up/repeated which will involve lots of editing.

To further develop our ideas we researched into music videos. One video in particular which has inspired us is Run DMC- its like that. This song is also very dancy with a heavy beat. We have decided that we would like to use a dance-off in the video like in run dmc with the dancing very alternative and comic. We are considering using the cross-dressers on one side and aother undecided group of people on the other side. We would also like to feature normal dancers dancing in a comic manner.

This clip is taken from the film napolean dynamite. This is similar to the style of dancing we would like to use for certain shots in our music video. We have already started thinking of people we could use in our video.

This video is titled ready for the floor by hot chip and we particularly like the abstract dancing and lights and colours used. I also like that the editing is very fast-paced and cut randomly using lots of repetition, rewinding and sped up shots. This should add interest and originality to the music video.

We have given thought to the target audience which we think is mainly females aged 14-20. If we find that the footage we will take gets slightly boring or doesn't fill enough time, we may also use singing performances. Because the singer in the video is female we may use a female singing which will contrast the cut between the shots of dancing and performing.
